1st year courses are same for all students namely,
Sem I (for half students, some students do Workshop Practice instead of Eng. Graphics) - Maths I (related to matrices and series calculations), Physics I (class XI physics, basically the Newtonian laws, a little more in detail), Chem I (again class XI cheme but this one is a little more detailed), Phonetics - I have forgotten the course name (English course in pronunciation and english language), Engineering Graphics ( a course in AutoCAD and engineering drawing, at BITS we don't do hand drawings - Lab Based), Biology (a standard course on basics of bio, high content), Probability and Statistics (something very essential in mathematical analysis)
Sem II - Maths II (Complex Maths), Physics II (electromagnetism etc, class XII), Chem II (organic chemistry), Workshop Practices - Lab Based (this is a course that introduces machines, materials, and machine processes, the course has a workshop component where students learn to operate the lathe, milling machines, CNC, shaper, drilling, fitting, welding, carpentary - AWESOME!), Physcology (new course introduced due to Ministry of Education requirements, I never had it ), Thermodynamics (tough course on the basics of thermo, like entropy, enthalpy etc), Computer Programming I (Course on C programming, lab based.this course is not taught well.many students have grave difficulty in coping.even I had )
Second year is also common but 2 courses in the fourth sem for each stream are different:
Sem III - Maths III (differential equations), Electrical Sciences I (electrical circuits and amplifiers etc) , Middle East History (new course introduced due to Ministry of Education requirements, I never had it ), Computer Programming II (a continuation of CP I), MT I (Fully Lab based course for Chem, phy and bio), Principle of Management (an interesting course on management principles, highly competitive), Mechanics of Solids (Mechanics course, tough, but interesting again its got force, mass, momentum etc)
Sem IV - Principles of Marketing (again a management course, interesting, competitve), Technical Report Writing (english course), Structures and Properties of Material (material properties of common metals, and their sturcture), Electrical Sciences II (electrical circuits, transformers, motors etc), MT II (this course too is lab based but this time its for mechanical stuff like fluid flow, pumps etc and for electrical stuff like motors, circuits etc), Applied Thermodynamics (MECH Course, this is actually easier than the thermodynamics taught in 1st year), Transport Phenomena I (MECH Course, this course is related to mass, momentum and energy transport in fluids)
PS I - Summer after second year. I have uploaded the PS I list for Summer 2009 for all those interested in knowing more about the companies, the link is as follows:
Download PS I List PDF
Now comes third year, this year divides all the coursework into disciplinary courses but there are a couple of common courses:
Sem V - Some respite from the 7 courses each sem, this sem has only 6 courses. Production Techniques (MECH - this course again takes us back to the workshop but in a little more details + a project to manufacture something), Design of Machine Elements (a course on design of gears etc), Transport Phenomena II (MECH & CHEM - detailed course on heat transfer and fluid flow), Advanced Mechanics of Solids (MECH - advanced version of Mechanics of Solids), Control Systems (All Students - a course on feedback controls, digital signal processing - must learn something! Its an important course which is tough), Optimizations (mathematical course on optimization on processes)
Sem VI - Computer Aided Design (MECH - Lab based 3D modelling software called CATIA is used to made 3D objects awesome! Plus has a project in the end), Dynamics of Machine Vibrations (MECH - A course on vibrations), Power Plant Engg - (MECH - course related to power plant thermodynamics), Prime Movers and Fluid Machines (MECH - Course on turnbines, nozzles, diffusers, pumps.basically prime mover related), Numerical Analysis (All Students - mathematical course on analysis of equations), Operations Research (All Students - again like optimization)
4th year is chilled out!
Sem VII or Sem VIII is for PS II. I took PS in XII sem and stayed on till mid july and had an awesome time!
Sem VII - is for electives, I have already mentioned that BITS doesnt offer a lot of electives and we need to do 4 electives along with an individual project.
I did Automotive Vehicles, Mechanical Equipment Design (gear design), Production Planning and Control (management type course on production), Quality Control & Reliability. Plus a project.
Sem VIII - PS II about 5.5 months with placements (Feb to July) _________________ Arjun A.Goyle
