|
|
What's the difference? The main question that pops up in anyone's head as soon as the topic of these two campuses is brought up.
I have read a post by a junior who consulted someone at Pilani and that person said "Goa is not considered BITS". This attitude is unhealthy, and I have tried to bust as many myths as I could.
Disclaimer: I sincerely hope this wont promote any arguments between Pilani n Goa Campus BITSIANS. I am also taking the undue liberty of postin this directly in the sticky section, because I think It'll be useful to future aspirants. This post must have been ages ago,but better late than never.
The question needs a straight and direct answer, but , owing to the geographical, cultural, demographical and chronological boundaries separating both campuses, I have to resort to this long post.
The main drawback of Goa campus is that it's not old enough, but please look at the infrastructure and then talk. The infrastructure of Goa campus is not very much different from Pilani Campus. The computer labs are at par.The only area where people can point their fingers are the advanced labs that Pilani students have access to, like for example, the Oyster lab, but these labs are accessible only by M.E students, and if u are a B.E, you must have completed some prerequisite courses to have access to them,as Aalap Bhai pointed out. So the presence or absence of these labs does not matter.Even Goa is oing to have its own unique lab(please help me out here, Aalap)by the end of this year.
The stats point out that students who do have a good enough score are considering both Pilani and Goa campuses before coming to any decision about the branch they want to take. The gap between CS Goa and CS Pilani was less last year, and people from the south generally prefer to take up Goa campus as their first preference. Even I opted for Msc Maths Goa as my first preference because my parents were reluctant to send me to Pilani because the weather there is quite harsh wheen compared to Goa, which has a maritime climate. The whole problem comes with the ones who have borderline scores. Deciding which branch and which campus becomes tougher as you begin to get median and lower rung scores (seriously no offence meant.).So we become scapegoats for the so called "Campus Comparison Pundits". These guys suck, with no aim or goal in life. all they atttempt to do is degrade the campus of their choice thus having a negative effect on themselves as well as the people around them.
Another misconception in the students'(especially parents' mind is that "YOU WILL BOOZE, OR END UP BECOMING A DRUG ADDICT"if you come to Goa.(The drug addict thing is too much, I agree, but that's what my parents were afraid of.) This is totally untrue . Goa is a holiday spot, yes, and drinks are cheap(there are no excise taxes) but do remember it has a firm christian background and has a few religious centers too. THe image one forms of Goa is of a party destination, but the campus is quite withdrawn from all such influences. All you need is plenty of self control. There is a total no-drinking rule inside the campus, and if you are caought, you WILL be sent home. The rules are pretty strict here. You have come here to study, keep this in mind, and I guarantee you wont go astray.Pilani is a quiet town with a small population , and the campus is spaced out.Goa campus, on the other hand,is built with all buildings interconnected with a sheltered pavement system\, owing to the regularly irregular rainfall.
The Faculty: Why are so many doubts being raised about the faculty, my simple mind cannot comprehend. The academic structure of both camopuses is 95% same. even the textbooks we follow are same. the only difference -the 5%- is the faculty. who are subjected to the same interviews and the same proceedure as they are subjected to at Pilani. in fact I heard that it's the choice of the faculty whether to go to Goa or Pilani. When the faculty and the students studying under them do not have a problem, why should parents and aspirants entertain unnnecessary fears?
The Placements: DO NOT PANIC : is the punchline. companies will start to visit slowly,as will happen to most budding campuses. The people who need to worry most about placements are the placement cell and the students who are giving interviews. I suggest incoming (and yet to come) students to print the words in caps in their minds. You have four(BE)/five(Msc) years left. Make the best use of them. Mould yourself. You want to be inducted into a company:Improve your skill sets, and create a scenario where the company must feel you are absolutely indispensible. You want to bell the CAT: take coaching, prepare seriously, lay your foundations right.Wnt to go for MS?Prepare well for your GRE, get your scores right. The key is YOU.
Hope my post clears your doubts. I wanted to type a lot more , but my arms are starting to ache. Any more questions, please feel free to post them. _________________ "There are only two things that are infinite- the universe and human stupidity, and I am not sure about the former" - Albert Einstein

hahaha.. another question.(but does this mean you dont consider Goa to be at par with Pilani right now?)
Obviously yes. That's why I joined!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it was another college, my answer would have changed, but keep in mind Goa is already a BITS!! _________________ "There are only two things that are infinite- the universe and human stupidity, and I am not sure about the former" - Albert Einstein |
