Quizzing trio on a Nobel trip
The trio make for a dead ly pack. Together the have won many compet itions and made the fina prize their own. Rosha Shankar, Sharat Nambis san and Kritika Adhikar are quiz wiz kids and their latest exploit has been winningtheNobelMemorialQuiz. All three are students of Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT), Delhi, andhaveemergedthenational winners in the Nobel Memorial Quiz (NMQ) 2009. It has fetched them a weeklong trip to Sweden. These B. Tech students outstudents out performed theteamsfrom IIT Delhi, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) and the National InstituteofIndustrialEngineering (NITIE), Mumbai.
The trio has won most of the campus quizzes this year held at Hindu College, St. Stephen's and IIT Delhi, they had also participated in the NMQ last year, in which they stood third.
Their success can be attributed to a unique partnership.
Adhikary, who is an avid quizzer sinceherschooldays,readsvoraciously on world history while Nambissan keeps track of happenings in the literary world.
Shankar, who has the maximum accolades made it to the top 20 in NASA's essay writing competition in 2003. He is a movie and music buff.
"Considering our preferences, we had distributed our preparation. It wasn't a cakewalk to remembernamesofalltheNobel laureates. There are many obscurepeopletoo," saysShankar.
ForNambissan,thechallenging part began when questions from areas other than the Nobel Prize were asked. "It started like a Nobel quiz but turned out to be general quiz," he says.
"Quizzing is no longer about memorising it is also about problem solving. We had to grapple with the picture of a cow, a picture of a bird and the name of the founder of twitter to arrive at Shashi Tharoor," says Shankar.
They are now looking forward to their trip to Sweden. Being state guests to Sweden is a coveted honour for the 21-year-olds.
They are anxiously waiting for their exams to get over.
The best thing about the trip is that all three can mutually zero in on a convenient time when they want to be invited. HOW THEY GOT TO THE TOP The Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week took place between October 31 and November 7, 2009, across five cities in India.
The programme included a series of seminars and lectures.
There was a national level Nobel Memorial Quiz, held across four cities - Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai with the regional winners clashing on November 7 at IIT Delhi.
The Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT), New Delhi, team was crowned the national champions defeating NITIE Mumbai, MSRIT Bengaluru and Symbiosis Law College, Pune who were the other regional champions, in the national finals.
The final eight were IIT Delhi, MAMC, Hindu College and Amity Institute of Aerospace Engineering.
Ace quizmaster Srinjoy Chaudhary conducted the quiz. In this 10 round quiz, three rounds focussed on the Nobel Prize.
The winners received their trophy at the final day banquet of the Nobel Memorial Quiz at the residence of the Ambassador of Sweden. FACT FILE NSIT has a quiz club.

A resident of Sarvapriya Vihar in South Delhi, she is fond of writing and was the editor of her school magazine in Mother's International School, Sri Aurobindo Marg. Besides writing her own stuff she prefers reading classics, with H. G. Wells being a favourite author. SHARAT NAMBISSAN Final year (fourth) computer engineering student. He is also into music. He plays the harmonica, has formal training in Carnatic music and loves rock music besides being a fan of science fiction writers such as Issac Asimov. He has been quizzing since his school days.
